![]() ![]() Texas received over 40,000 people to its prison system each year, nearly 75,000 if all facilities are counted. Conversely, those inmates kept at G/J5?a classification for offenders with a history of assault on other inmates or correctional staff?only accounted for about 2% of the inmate population. ![]() These inmates accounted for over three-fourths of the total population. The majority of all Texas offenders were kept at a custody level of G/J1 to J3, meaning they were low level risks to themselves or the public and featured good histories of discipline and behavior while incarcerated. Their average sentence length was about 19 years. Only 57% of all inmates had a high school diploma, a GED or another equivalent. ![]() The median IQ also fell with raised security standards. Average ages for Texas inmates seemed to raise with incarceration level, ranging from 34 to 37 between low security Substance Abuse Felony Punishment Facilities to prison. The majority of Texas inmates in the facilities had committed a violent crime. The black population was a bit higher, but not by a significant margin. The demographics of ethnicity are very evenly split between Hispanic, black and white inmates, each of them accounting for about one-third of the population. Of these, 92% are male and only 8% are female, which is concurrent with national averages. Texas inmates, counting all facilities that operate a correctional service (including Substance Abuse Felony Punishment Facilities, spillover jails, and the prisons) number over 150,000. ![]()
